The Korea Religious Council (President Kyeung-Seuk Ryu; hereafter referred to as the KRC) held the “2017 Religious Leaders Conference” for key religious figures and leaders on the first of the month in the Emerald Hall of the 3rd floor of the Lotte World Hotel in Songpa-gu, Seoul. The primary focus of the conference was to foster religious peace.

Thirty representatives of approximately ten different religious orders and groups attended the conference, including Kyeung-Seuk Ryu, President of Family Federation for World Peace and Unification-Korea; Songta Sunim, Executive Director of the Precepts Council of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order; Dojin Sunim, Dean of Academic Affairs of the Korean Buddhist Taego Order; Young-Kil Choi, Chairman of the Korea Muslim Federation; Sun-Hun Lee, Chairman of Tenrikyo-Korea; Soo-Cheol Hong, Head of Academic Affairs of Daejonggyo; Elder Dong-Cheol Bae of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; Jeong-Su Ahn, President of the International Christian Mission Federation, etc., and cut  ceremonial rice cakes.

FFWPU-Korea President Kyeung-Seuk Ryu gave the opening remarks: “The Korea Religious Council will continue to develop various projects throughout this coming year, in order to become an organization that fosters harmony and cooperation between religions and contributes to world peace. More than anything, the Korean Religious Council will focus on developing the areas of a ‘movement of religious alliance,’ a ‘movement of religious peace’ and the ‘nurturing of future leaders,’ in order to accomplish its vision of a ‘people’s religion’ that is loved by all religious groups.”

The conference consisted of opening remarks by KRC President Kyeung-Seuk Ryu; congratulatory remarks by Songta Sunim, Executive Director of the Precepts Council of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order and Jong-Seo Kim (Vice-President of Seoul University), President of the Korean Association for New Religions; the reading of a congratulatory poem; the reading of a statement of hope for the New Year by Jeong-Su Ahn, President of the International Christian Mission Federation; the cutting of rice cakes for the New Year; toast by Elder Dong-Cheol Bae of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; a luncheon; greetings by representatives of each religious order and an introduction to KRC’s activities for 2017.

Together with the Hyo Jeong World Peace Foundation, the KRC also held the Global Interreligious Scholarship Award Ceremony at 2 pm on the fifth of the month at the Cheong Shim International Youth Training Center’s gymnasium in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi. 80 interreligious middle and high school students, who had been recommended from 10 religious groups, were presented with scholarships and medals.

As the first religious consultative group in Korea, the KRC has been involved with a variety of activities under the banner of an interreligious peace movement, in order to promote religious harmony and unity.

Last year, in addition to being selected for the first Global Interreligious Scholarship Award and presented with scholarships, the students participated in the “Global Interreligious Scholarship Students’ Trek Up Mt. Baekdu for Unification.” From July 30 to August 4, they explored Mt. Baekdu, as they wished for the unification of not only the religious orders, but also of their homeland.

This year’s second Global Interreligious Scholarship students will be participating in an overseas trip to Fukuoka, Japan, in early August, as well as introduce the Junior Religious Harmony Movement..... [See the original story]
