With the Korean Peninsula embroiled in its security crisis from the threat of North Korea’s nuclear weapons, the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) held the “2017 Global Rally for the Peaceful Reunification of the Korean Peninsula” in Seoul for the inauguration of a new age of unification and peace in their efforts to overcome the crises surrounding the Korean Peninsula.

At this “2017 Global Rally for the Peaceful Reunification of the Korean Peninsula,” 80,000 people, including world religious and political leaders from seventy countries, are expected to attend. With this rally coming just around the corner, we met with FFWPU-Korea Chairman Kyeung-Seuk Ryu on November 7, and inquired about the significance of this rally and FFWPU’s vision. Chairman Ryu is also acting as the Co-Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the 2017 Global Rally for the Peaceful Reunification of the Korean Peninsula.

Chairman Ryu expressed how this rally will mark the beginning of a new era of harmony, unity and peace in overcoming the crises surrounding the Korean Peninsula caused by internal disputes and conflicts. It will also become a peace gathering, where the true vision of peace (including peace in Northeast Asia) which all humanity must strive towards, will be presented, as well as the resolution to realize this vision.

Question: It seems that this global rally for the peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula will be held at the most opportune time. Please provide the background information and significance of this global peace rally.

“Currently, Korea is experiencing disorder and crisis internally and externally. Although the security crisis of the Korean Peninsula, due to North Korea’s nuclear program and missile provocations, is not something new, North and South Korea have not been able to hold talks, due to differences in perspectives, as well as the extreme confrontation between North Korea and the USA, involving declarations of war, that is imposing fear upon the Korean people.

Internally, the opposition between liberals and conservatives following the political disorder and the presidential election incident last year, regionalism, generational conflicts and escalating political polarization, as well as nationalist, self-centered claims, are preventing the formation of a healthy national community.

The crises surrounding the Korean Peninsula are not just the issues of North and South Korea, but are directly correlated with world peace. If these crises continue unabated, national security will become more difficult to attain, thus adding fuel to the fire. To resolve these crises surrounding the Korean Peninsula, neighboring countries must reflect on these issues together, and step up to the position of contributing towards global peace, centering on the Korean Peninsula, while making new changes on a global scale, as opposed to merely serving their own national interests.

At this time, as our global community is positioned in a crisis more serious than that of any other, the upcoming “2017 Global Rally for the Peaceful Reunification of the Korean Peninsula” will become a peace gathering in which it will open a new era of harmony, unity and peace, overcoming the crises surrounding the Korean Peninsula caused by internal disputes and conflicts. This rally will champion the true vision of peace (including peace in Northeast Asia) that all of humanity must strive towards, and resolve to realize this vision.”
