University Student Leaders from Korea and Japan take part in the Baekdusan March for Peace and Unification

June 30th: Participants of the Korea-Japan University Student Leaders’ Baekdusan March for Peace and Unification cosponsored by the Universal Peace Federation and the Peace and Unification Federation, pose for a picture at Baekdusan.

This event was organized by college-aged second generation leaders from Korea and Japan as a project that strives toward the unification of North and South Korea, which is the key to the settlement of peace in Northeast Asia. This project was implemented to promote peace in Northeast Asia through historical education, as well as to create a social atmosphere supportive of the Unification of North and South Korea.

Recognizing that “Reflection on the past is the first step towards peace”

40 university students from Korea and Japan embarked on an historical pilgrimage in hopes of peace in Northeast Asia.

The Universal Peace Federation in Korea and the Peace and Unification Federation in Japan have collaborated in organizing the “Korea-Japan University Student Leaders’ Baekdusan March for Peace and Unification.” These university students have a six-day schedule from the 28th to the 3rd, which includes visiting the Lushun Prison in China where the Patriot Ahn Jung-Geun’s philosophy of peace began, exploring Baekdusan, the sacred mountain of the Korean people and visiting the North Manchurian area, which still bears traces of the anti-Japanese patriotic martyrs for Korean Independence. The aim was to reflect upon the past Japanese Imperial Rule and to make a new resolution for the future Peace of Northeast Asia.

The University Students from Korea and Japan pledged combine their efforts for the sake of peace in Northeast Asia in front of Baekdusan, the Korean people’s sacred mountain on the 30rh.

On the 29th, the university students from Korea and Japan visited the Lushun Prison Ruins in Lushun, Dairen City where the patriot Ahn was imprisoned for 144 days. It was there where they could better understand the “Eastern Peace Theory” through the letters she had written while in prison. In patriot Ahn’s letters, she strongly states that “in order to protect the Northeast, the political strategy (war of aggression) must change.” Not only does it serve as a self-reflection on the Japanese militarism and war criminals and Asia’s history of aggression, but her words also penetrate through the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s impudicity, which reinforces the extremist right action. It was an opportunity for the participants to realize that the only way towards a peaceful and prosperous future for Korea and Japan is through careful reflection on the wrongful past.

On the 30th, the participants hiked up Baekdusan and prayed for the unification of North and South Korea and for peace in Northeast Asia. On the 1st, we plan to visit the General Kim Jwa-Jin’s Cheongsan-ri battle field and anti-Japanese historical site together with the team “Cheongsan-ri Historical Pilgrimage with Song Il Guk” organized by the General Kim Jwa-Jin Memorial Association. We also participated in the “2014 Peace Bike” activity of riding from the Amnok River Bridge to Ilbogwa, where one can get the closest view of North Korea. The actor Song Il-Kuk, who is the great-grandchild of General Kim Jwa-Jin, also participated in this event. The Universal Peace Federation is a non-governmental organization (NGO) which was established as the United Nations Economic and Social Council’s special advisory organization by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon and Han Hak Ja in 2005, and seeks to transcend barriers of nation, race, religion and ideology, through its peace activities throughout the global community.
