‘Peace Road 2016’ Spreads the Message of Unification and Peace from the DMZ

“Peace Road-Korea 2016,” a part of “Peace Road 2016,” a global project expressing hope for world peace and the unification of the Korean peninsula, came to a grand finish on the morning of August 16, with 1,200 high school and college students from 63 nations, including Korea, participating.

“Peace Road-Korea,” which started in South Chungcheong Province on August 2, passing through 15 metropolitan cities and provinces with a total 1,000 participants, continued until August 15. On August 16, the participants welcomed 200 international bicycle riders from throughout world at Imjingak Pavilion, one symbol of the division between the two Koreas.

A group of bicycle riders from many countries, including the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Australia, Russia, Hungary, Brazil, Uruguay, Israel, the Philippines, Nepal, Kenya and the Congo, departed from Busan on August 9, riding across the nation through scorching heat, aiming for their final destination at Imjingak Pavilion.

In the first part of the ceremony, they held various events, including the announcement of a peace message for unification, a DMZ fence wire-cutting ceremony, a release of peace doves and a chorus singing “Song of Unity.”

Tae-Ik Jung, President of the Korean Council on Foreign Relations made the welcoming speech, and two congressmen from Korea’s Minju Party, Hu-Duk Yun (representing the Gab district of Paju, Gyeonggi Province) and Jong-Sung Im (representing the Eul district of Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province), along with Seung-Pyo Hong, President of the Gyeonggi Tourism Corporation, gave congratulatory speeches.

Congressman Yun said, “The fact that we are gathered here today at Imjingak Pavilion makes this a meaningful day for the peace of mankind and the Korean peninsula.” He further expressed his desire for unification, saying, “The distance between here and Pyeongyang is shorter than we think. I believe that, thanks to this ceremony, we are one step closer to the reunification of the two Koreas.”

Congressman Im praised the participants, saying, “By taking part in this Peace Road event for world peace on this very hot day, you have shown me that you are true ambassadors of peace.”

In the second part of the ceremony, all the participants moved to the civilian border of the DMZ and held the DMZ Peace Road events to expressing their wishes for the reunification of two Koreas. The program was specially prepared to garner support for the unification of the Korean peninsula by gathering young people from around the world to visit the actual site of Korea’s division.

After visiting the landmark, which represents the intense confrontation between the Koreas, the participants emphasized the need to establish the Fifth Secretariat of the United Nations in Korea in order to bring about everlasting peace on Korean peninsula, where North Korea’s recent nuclear experiments and long-range missile tests have increased military tensions to new heights. They resolved to expand and carry out this movement into a quest for worldwide peace.

The organizing committee of Peace Road 2016 said, “The Peace Road projects, held every year with the participation of nations around the world, will continue to actively spread the idea that the reunification of the Korean peninsula, the only region that still remains divided, is the cornerstone for world peace.” The committee added, “Through these activities, we will gather active support from the global community to establish the Fifth Secretariat of the United Nations in Korea.”

The Peace Road project has its root in the International Peace Highway project, officially proposed by Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, founders of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, during the 10th International Conference on the Unity of Sciences (ICUS) held in Seoul in 1981. This project is intended to open an age of peace in the global village by connecting the world with a single road; thereby relieving disputes and conflicts across the world and binding the entire human race into one family.

This year’s event began on February 15, with an opening ceremony at the Imjingak Pavilion, joined by 1,000 global leaders from 60 nations, including 150 current parliamentarians from 41 nations, and will continue in regions across Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania until November. A total of 500,000 people from more than 140 countries will participate in the events.

The events in Korea were led by the Citizen's Federation for the Unification of Korea, a civilian advisory branch of the Presidential Committee for the Unification Preparation and the Universal Peace Federation (UPF), a special advisory organization of United Nations Economic and Social Council, and sponsored by the Ministry of Unification, the city of Busan, the city of Daegu, North Gyeongsang Province and the Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation.....
