As the carbonated barley drink reaches its 32nd year since its release, Ilhwa has come forward with an aggressive marketing campaign with actor Ju Won. In a television advertisement with the catchphrase “Taste the legend,” Ju Won stars as the “Barley Warrior” and fights one-on-one with a polar bear representing Coca-Cola. The advertisement doesn’t neglect to mention that McCol was “the first Korean carbonated barley drink that shook the stronghold of Cola,” reminding the viewer of its heyday in the 1980’s when it overturned the carbonated drink market. As the advertisement went viral, McCol’s sales increased over 20% from last year during April and May...
