Japan urged to act on abductions of UC members

By Reporter Bong Seok Sohn  paulsohn@khan.co.kr

“There are incidents of Unification Church members being kidnapped and forcefully converted in Japan, which has been ongoing for more than 40 years.”

“Please be aware of the reality of the persecution we have been receiving in Japan because of our faith, and please protect our human rights.”

Japanese Unification Church members claim that Christian churches in Japan have been kidnapping their followers and have forcefully been converting them.

The followers of the Unification Church appealed for countermeasures, revealing cases of damages suffered in a “press conference and submission of a letter of petition by the Countermeasures Committee for Human Rights Victims in Relation to the Abduction and Confinement of Japanese Unification Church Members" held in front of the Japanese Embassy in Chong-ro Borough, Seoul, on the afternoon of March 23.

The Unification Church stressed that “abduction and confinement has been occurring in Japan, where religious freedom has been protected by the constitution,” and added “the Japanese government must apply countermeasures to prevent abduction and confinement happening to Unification Church members as a result of religious discrimination and prejudice.”

They stated that “because our faith is different, some Christian ministers, business oriented lawyers and left wing deprogrammers are committing acts of conversion by force. They presented the letter of petition asking to resolve the issue of abduction and confinement.
They claimed that “since the first outbreak of the abduction, more than 4,300 members have become kidnap victims”, and added “Japanese women married to Korean husbands are unable to visit Japan out of fear of being kidnapped and detained.”

These Unification Church followers revealed that “when abduction occurs, the police tend to treat the matter as a simple problem between family members or religions,” and told us, “Public authorities must immediately intervene when incidents happen and secure the person’s safety.”

These representatives presented the letter of petition with the signature of more than 10,000 people to the Japanese Embassy after the press conference. [이 게시물은 관리자님에 의해 2010-10-14 00:13:28 뉴스자료에서 이동 됨]
